Dear students,
If you have ever been to Britain you will have noticed that Britain has literaly many faces. Britain is a multicultural and multi-ethnic country. May it be on the streets of London, Birmingham or Liverpool - you can see and get to know people from many different cultures. Everybody has his or her own story, but many stories have something in common.
You are sincerely invited to trace back one of the major ways that people took in the second half of the 20th century - from the West Indies to Britain – and to discover how the people from the Caribbean lived in Britain.
The West Indies are territories in the Caribbean which were once colonized by Britain. So like many other countries the West Indies once belonged to the British Empire, and nowadays most of the countries still belong to the Commonwealth of Nations.
After World War II, many West Indian people took their chances and travelled thousands of miles around the globe in order to live in Britain. However, in contrast to their hopes and expectations many soon realized that life was not easy and that reality proved to be different from what they had expected.
